Firstly in November 2009 we saw that people looked online for products and services more than traditional formats like Yellow pages etc. Web Marketing is all about getting your web site positioned so these people can find you.

Secondly this year in 2010 we saw that more people searched in Facebook than Google. Thats an amazing thing and again should be part of your web marketing strategy.

Businesses today no matter how big or small need a web site that is promoting their products and services.

Not Just Any Site

Unfortunately most web designers have no idea about web marketing. They create what we call a brochure site.

Let me give you an example.

Tyrehouse had one of these websites that had been there for quite a while. We did a test on it for a few weeks and they got a whole 67 visitors a month. The reason is that search engines downgrade sites that have no ongoing content. Their web marketing was non existent.

We rebuilt their site and now they can be found for all sorts of key phrases that people are searching for. Here are some examples of what web marketing can do for your business. The links will take you to google search in Australia as that is their market. Also notice we use Australian spelling for Tyres.

Examples of Web Marketing at Work

New Commodore Tyres – Targeting specific cars tyres – page one out of about 342,000 results

New VH Commodore Tyres – Targeting Specific Models – page one out of about 13,600 results

Radial Commodore Tyres – Targeting specific brands – page one out of about 164,000 results

Radial Tyres Windsor – Targeting specific suburbs - page one out of about 4,240 results

Car Servicing Dural – Target Specific services - page one out of about 248,000 results

So they were not getting any results for any of these terms before and there are a lot more we could show you.

How Did We Achieve This?

By using a system of blog posts, which by the way are just individual webpages, a little SEO and some posting on social bookmarking sites we are able to get your products and services highly ranked and bringing in traffic and new customers for you.

It is web marketing not just web design.

You see most companies spend more time on how their site looks than the content in their site, yet it is this content that drives traffic and it is the web marketing of that content that drives it to the top of the search engines. So called SEO is just a small part of the equation.

As a business owner you should know that video is becoming more important to get your products and services noticed.

Now its not imperative but have a look at this video and the comments below to see how easy it is.

Don is using a Kodak ZI8 which I have mentioned before.

Yes, you can get this same look at home without a lot of expense!

The backdrop is a wall I painted a dark shade of red (not as dark as maroon), then daubed black paint in spots with a paint brush, and used a dry rag to rub most of the black away.

This is a faux painting process called scumbling. It gives the look of red leather.

The spotlight on the wall can be done with a small spotlight bulb in an inexpensive clip light. It doesn’t need much wattage – about 60watts should be max.

The reflector I show can be done with a piece of white cardboard from you neighborhood art supply store. You can simulate that big softbox light by using another piece of white cardboard and shining a spotlight onto it. Probably a 100 watt bulb.

The hair light near the ceiling can be another small spotlight bulb, or even a standard lightbulb with a cardboard tube to control the light. Don’t let the cardboard get too hot.

The best way is still by using WordPress and posting fresh content targeting your products and services so if you need help get in touch with us today and we will get your business noticed.

In the last few years we have seen some amazing promotions that have used Social Media.

The best thing is that it doesn’t rely on the size of your business to use the techniques that have created these great promotions.

For the release of the new theme park based around Harry Potter the marketing executive went against all the traditional marketing advise and invited the ten top bloggers to the release and this created a buzz that was unseen before.

Blendtec used Youtube to expand their market for their blender and has almost created a cult following as they blend everything from iPhones to marbles to highlight their product.

Old Spice used Youtube and other Social Media to create a a huge marketing frenzy and recently the marketing company released a video explaining their campaign.

Click here to view the embedded video.

You Can Do It

Now as you watch this you may be thinking our small business could not do this however nothing could be further from the truth.

Small businesses can use the exact same strategies to get massive amounts of traffic to their website.

Its not just video but all kinds of social media. Blogging, flash Powerpoints, photo sharing sites, articles, Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter and so much more that even the smallest business can use to promote their products and services.

Just a Little Imagination

It just takes a little imagination and random thinking to make use of these social media sites to promote your business. Its not like the old style marketing where you put an add in the paper, television or radio as nthese last years not days so the impact for your business is long term.

Unlike the traditional advertising media it also does not cost you a arm and a leg to utilize these different formats.

If you would like to know more and get some help using Social Media for your business Contact us today and let us show you what can be done.

Nibbo is a great new search engine aggregator that has some very interesting tools.

The one I like the most is the ability to view the page directly inside the search results.

Nibbo is a new concept of search engine that will collect search results from multiple sources and merge them on a single results page. It’s highly configurable, and it’s even possible to create custom search engines.

Use drag and drop to reorder the search types, and use the small arrow in each type to collapse or uncollapse the previews. The configuration will be remembered in your computer, and it’s possible to share the same configuration among multiple computers by signing in.

It also has a Firefox plugin to make it even more versatile.

Probably the best innovation I have seen since Paypal for doing business. Unfortunately not quite ready for Australia but I am sure it will get here.

This was started by the founder of Twitter and has major backing from Angel investors.

Simple and transparent card fees.

We’re focused on providing the best payment experience in the world, and that includes cost. While taking cash is always free and easy, accepting cards can be confusing and costly. That’s why Square has simple pricing and no hidden fees, monthly charges, or contracts. We’re constantly working with our partners to simplify and lower costs associated with accepting card payments.

Web Marketing For Profit is not just about making your website work better for your business. We also help in the day to day running by providing additional products, services and consulting.

Example: One product you should have a look at is Google Docs.

Create basic documents from scratch or start from a template.

You can easily do all the basics, including making bulleted lists, sorting by columns, adding tables, images, comments, formulas, changing fonts and more. And it’s free.

Upload your existing files.

Google Docs accepts most popular file formats, including DOC, XLS, ODT, ODS, RTF, CSV, PPT, etc. So go ahead and upload your existing files.

Familiar desktop feel makes editing a breeze.

Just click the toolbar buttons to bold, underline, indent, change font or number format, change cell background color and so on.

Control Who Sees your Documents.

Once you have uploaded or created a new document be it a spreadsheet, drawing or document you can then share that document with others.

You can either give them the right to edit which is great for collaboration or just share as a read only file. Here watch this video.

Google TV is clearly a challenge to Apple TV, the Boxee Box, TiVo and to some extent cable itself. The goal is to fuse the Web with televisions in a way that other Internet-connected TVs don’t.

That is, Google TV is an open platform free of restrictions and powered by hardware that can handle Flash.

Google TV will be available in set-top boxes and televisions this year, with Sony and Logitech as hardware partners.

Amazon has also jumped on the band wagon providing on demand video.

What is Adwords?

The first thing we need to determine is what exactly is Adwords not so much in the functionality but in the process.

I am sure you know that Adwords is a pay per click advertising system provided by Google to help promote your goods and services.

I am sure you also know that there are a lot of businesses out there promoting their services to help you in your Adwords campaign. They often consider success as driving a lot of traffic to your site however this is not really what you want.

But What exactly is Adwords?

Adwords is a system which allows you to place adds in the browser next to the generic search terms. Quite often it may be hard to achieve a high position for your website because of competition or being a new site so by using Adwords you can achieve a high ranking in Google on the right hand side by paying for it.

Most businesses equate higher traffic with higher sales so pay a small fortune for traffic but in most cases do not see a dramatic increase in sales.

Traffic is something you can have a lot of and still go broke so lets set up a small business scenario to show you what I mean.

Business scenario For Adwords.

In this business I am going to sell Honda Lawn Mowers. The first thing most of these companies will do is go to the Google keyword tool or use some specialized software to research the keywords.

As you can see there is a lot of traffic to be had but will these keywords get you sales?

Probably not but the adwords company will be sending you a lot of traffic and fulfilled their part of the agreement.

It is what we call the shotgun method and will cost you a lot of money with very little results.

To find better keywords that people are actually entering to buy a Honda Lawn Mower we have to go a little deeper and so we now can use the series number or type to get better keywords that people will buy on.

honda lawn mower hrx
hrx honda mower
honda hrx 426 sx
honda hrx 476 sx

Not nearly as much traffic but people who enter these type of keywords are buyers not researchers.

It is what we call Targeted Traffic for which you will pay a lot less but generate many more sales.

The other part of the equation is that Google rewards people who do this by placing your adds higher in the mix because the page that you redirect to from the add will have similar keywords etc so be more relevant. They call this quality score.

Different Markets react differently.

Once the initial Campaign is set up we can do some mix and matching to see if our add will work using the more generic terms. It is the add that is seen on the page incorporated with the keywords and then the conversions we want to track.

In some industries using the more generic terms but with a well laid out add can do very well however it takes a lot of time and tweaking to get this just right. Using targeted keyword initially should result in better sales.

Traffic is not all the same!

Quite often people who set up your adwords will also blast it all over the world costing you a small fortune for irrelevant traffic. If your selling locally the campaign needs to be shown just to your local area and not globally.

Remember their job is to bring traffic.

Replace your adwords with Content

You don’t want to be paying Google for the rest of your life so it is important to add regular updated information about your products and services. Eventually as this content rises to the top of the search engine you can cancel the different adds that are competing with your content.

The best way to do this is through blogging and using the titles, tags, descriptions, rss feed and social bookmarking to achieve this.

With posts you can target geographic areas, individual products etc. So by writing a post on “Honda lawn mower hrx series” you will find as your site becomes authoritative that they will rise to the top. Posting allows you to add a number of keywords around this product also.

At the moment there is a huge debate in Australian about blocking certain sites on the Internet.

While this seems like a good idea for the average computer user it will not have any effect on the element who access these sites. The reason is that it is only effective on those who do not know how to get around it.

I am all for getting rid of the outer fringe pornography such as bestiality, child porno etc but surley a better system would be to enable households and enterprise to control this themselves. Letting a governments have private unscrutinized lists will only lead to possible political infractions in the future.

What can you do?

One way you can do something is to go to a site called Open DNS and apply its filtering system to your router which will then block any content that you don’t want over your network.

This system will also speedup your Internet Surfing. I prefer to use the router set up as it covers the any computer using our Internet connection. Click here for instructions

While it is not a perfect system it has been working well in our business and homes.

Go to Open DNS and set up.

Watch their videoHere is how to set it up at home and work.
