Security for your office and businessAt the moment there is a huge debate in Australian about blocking certain sites on the Internet.

While this seems like a good idea for the average computer user it will not have any effect on the element who access these sites. The reason is that it is only effective on those who do not know how to get around it.

I am all for getting rid of the outer fringe pornography such as bestiality, child porno etc but surley a better system would be to enable households and enterprise to control this themselves. Letting a governments have private unscrutinized lists will only lead to possible political infractions in the future.

What can you do?

One way you can do something is to go to a site called Open DNS and apply its filtering system to your router which will then block any content that you don’t want over your network.

External Hard Drives for Business File Storage

Have you ever thought that backing up your data could be easy and affordable.

Over the last few years there has been an incredible increase in the technology of hard drives. I bought a maxtor external hard drive which was 500 gig and nearly $500 3 years ago which has been excellent.

However the price of normal hard drives has come down a lot so wouldn’t it be good if you could use a normal hard drive to do the same thing.

While the external hard drive has been good I have nearly filled it up and was looking at getting another one however it seemed silly to pay so much without any versatility.

The laptop cadies are small,  sleek and take little room. As I travel quite a lot it is great to be able to download big chunks of video files to my caddy and access them later when I get home.

Many of the small cadies come with a built in USB connection as seen in the one above. I can add a 500 gig 2.5 inch laptop hard drive for just over $100 and smaller ones even cheaper.

I now have 3 hard drives and can just interchange them any time.

Hard Drive Caddy.

These are also referred to as docking stations.

Today you can buy what they call hard drive cadies. These are docking stations you can plug into your laptop or desktop via a USB port and simply plug in any number of hard drives you like. This is fantastic for back up and storage.

They can use laptop or full size hard drives and many today will accommodate both.

You could have one hard drive for documents, one for graphics and one for video. With the price of hard drives dropping it is now easy to have multiple hard drives full of information leaving your main computer free to do the hard work.

Are you aware that most visitors leave a website within 10 seconds of landing on the home page?

And they may never return to your site. To keep your website visitors stay longer, you need to engage them.

Follow these 10 simple rules to build some core loyal visitors who will return to your site frequently.

1. For those who have a brick-and-mortar business and you want an online presence, don’t just hand over your printed brochure to the web developer for your site’s contents. People like to read content not sales brochures.

2. Get good text, picture, and video contents related to your services or products and organize them into categories for your website publication.

How do you get content?

You can ask your kids to write contents for you. Today’s kids are information savvy and know how to do research on right topics. They can help take pictures and videos of your products and provide narrations. If you cannot leverage your kids talents and there isn’t time to develop contents, buy them from online sources, like distributors of private label rights to articles and stock photographs. You need some content set to launch your web site.

3. Ask your developer for some sample websites he has developed previously and review them. If you find clutter, music, unprofessional graphics, etc. in those sites, run away from the developer. Advertise them through out your site but don’t use any ‘in-your face advertising’ techniques. You can use side bars for this type of advertising with interesting anecdotes, pictures, etc. Be creative and use fantasy. This all builds Trust.

Your website is your publishing medium. It is not your online catalogue or just a brochure site. You want repeat visitors who spend their time on your site for valuable information.
